On Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon and evening 150 Barnet Copthall swimmers from all squads took part in the annual Club Championships. The events on offer are 50 free, 400 free, 100 breast, 200 IM, 100 fly, 100 back and 100 free and the swimmers are divided into 9 age groups: 8 and under, 9yrs, 10yrs, 11yrs, 12yrs, 13yrs, 14yrs, 15yrs, 16 and over. Points are awarded for the first 8 places in each age group (1st place = 8pts, 2nd = 7pts, ..... 8th = 1pt)
(Better late than never, sorry but I was a bit occupied with the Club Champs last week plus have only just received the Hy-Tek version of the results to update our database)
Fifty Barnet Copthall swimmers were in Bath (along with thousands of people there for the Christmas market!) last weekend for the Team Bath Grand Prix. At the end of the three days of competition the club came away with the Top Visiting Team award and 19 National Qualifying times as well as scores of medals.
Back in action at the Club Championships yesterday was Akshay Shah who has recently returned from South Africa where he competed in the African Senior Swimming Championships. In these championships Akshay swam in the 50m, 100m, and 200m backstroke and, despite the altitude in Jo'burg (1700m) causing breathing problems, produced PBs in both the 50 back and the 200 back - in the 200m he also qualified for the final. Barnet Copthall must have felt very small and very cold by comparison to the Ellis Park venue.
