On Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon and evening 150 Barnet Copthall swimmers from all squads took part in the annual Club Championships. The events on offer are 50 free, 400 free, 100 breast, 200 IM, 100 fly, 100 back and 100 free and the swimmers are divided into 9 age groups: 8 and under, 9yrs, 10yrs, 11yrs, 12yrs, 13yrs, 14yrs, 15yrs, 16 and over. Points are awarded for the first 8 places in each age group (1st place = 8pts, 2nd = 7pts, ..... 8th = 1pt)

The 8 and under boys champion is John Hughes who won 3 events and finished on 24 points. In this age group, Georgia Hare was second with 1 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze - a total of 47 points. In third place was Chihiro Ishida with 40 points - 1 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze.

Haris Bandey was a clear winner in the 9yrs boys - first place in all 7 events gave him the maximum of 56 points. The remaining medals in this age group were shared between Konstantin Kapanadze (40pts), Jeremy Simanjuntak (37pts), Matt Savitz (35pts) and Johnathan Walker (29pts). The 9yrs girls champion was Paige Powell with an almost perfect 55 points - 6 gold and 1 silver. The remaining gold as well as 6 silvers were won by Alice Bell giving her 50 points and second place. There was another perfect score in the 10yrs boys with Robert Dos Santos winning gold in all events and therefore gaining 56 points. He was followed by Hamish Hudson with 5 silver and 2 bronze (47pts) and Alexander Kapanadze with 2 silver and 4 bronze (38pts). In the 12yr category we again had a perfect score of 56pts in the girls competition - Shannon Powell joining her 9 year old sister Paige to be club champion in her first year with Barnet Copthall. Mollie Whiteside finished on 37 points and Tara Patel on 33 points. Jamie Richter won the 12 year old boys with 51 points, followed by Yaron Ash on 47 points and Liam Chong on 43 points.

The last of these was very close with 2 points separating the top 3 - Charlie Boldison has 50pts, Chris Eddon 49pts and Randal Cliff 48pts!

I would like to thank everyone who volunteered their help at the gala. Special thanks go to Andy Woska who organised the officials and timekeepers, Tim Bell who organised the marshalls and those on the medal table and Jane O'Sullivan who (using her posh voice apparently) put together a team to provide the food on Sunday. Thanks also to all those - Ian Woollard, Sarah Lawlor, Lynn Fernandes and Donna Phillip-Forde - who rose from their sick beds to come in and help. EVEN which ever one of you it was who generously passed on your germs to me ........ and so that's me signing off sneezing and coughing bravely. Bev
