Yesterday 48 BCSC swimmers ventured out despite the snow and ice and travelled to Manchester by coach to see some of Europe and the USA's finest swimmers compete in a head to head competition called 'Duel in the Pool'. We had an amazingly easy run up the motorway and arrived in Manchester at lunchtime. The venue was well organised for our arrival as the largest group and we were all seated together at the turn end of the 25m pool at Manchesters Aquatic Centre. There was lots pre competition entertainment with crowd warm ups (including Jomelson being caught on camera.......I wont expand, you will have to ask him!!).
The competition began with Europe in an almost impossible position of trying to catch up with the Americans impressive point score from Day one, but the enthusiasm was not dampened and we were privilaged to witness two world records being set. The highlight for many of us was watching Britain's Michael Rock in the 200 fly swimming alongside the mighty Mr Phelps. Rock swam with conviction and took the lead at 100 m, he held his stroke and maintained his lead winning the event in style. I hope one of his friends videoed the scoreboard for him as I am not sure how often he will see his name above Michael Phelps' !
The American team stormed to victory but this is a new format for the Europeans and I think they will learn from this and hopefully we will see participation from more European countries in future years.
With sore throats (and heads!) from all the cheering we headed back to the coach for our long drive home. Thankfully we missed any more snow fall and had no hold ups coming home either.
I would like to thank the kids on behalf of myself, Louise, Anita and Matthew for behaving impeccably. It is no mean feat containing 48 fit young kids for all those hours but you were a real credit to both the club and your families, thank you.
